CHENNAI: July 15 holds significant importance in the realm of education as it marks the birth anniversary of the esteemed former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Kamaraj. In recognition of his unparalleled contributions to the field of education and his unwavering commitment to the upliftment of the masses through education, the Government of India has designated this day as Education Development Day.

K. Kamaraj, fondly known as "Perunthalaivar" (meaning the great leader), was born on July 15, 1903, in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. Despite limited formal education, he possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge and believed that education was the key to transforming society. With his visionary leadership, he played a pivotal role in shaping the education landscape of Tamil Nadu.

During his tenure as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1954 to 1963, Kamaraj implemented several groundbreaking reforms in the education sector. Recognizing the importance of literacy and access to quality education, he introduced the "Midday Meal Scheme" in schools, which aimed to provide free meals to students. This initiative not only addressed the issue of malnutrition but also significantly increased school attendance, especially among underprivileged children.

Furthermore, Kamaraj championed the cause of compulsory primary education, ensuring that every child had the opportunity to receive basic education. He initiated the Universal Elementary Education program, which aimed to eradicate illiteracy in the state. Through the establishment of numerous schools and the recruitment of dedicated teachers, he strived to make education accessible to all, irrespective of caste, creed, or economic background.

In addition to promoting primary education, Kamaraj laid emphasis on higher education as well. He established numerous universities, colleges, and professional institutions to cater to the growing educational needs of the state. These institutions not only facilitated academic growth but also encouraged research and innovation, fostering intellectual development and progress.

Kamaraj's efforts in improving education extended beyond the boundaries of Tamil Nadu. As the President of the Indian National Congress, he played a significant role in formulating the National Education Policy of 1968. This policy emphasized the importance of a comprehensive and holistic approach to education, focusing on the all-round development of students.

In honor of K. Kamaraj's remarkable contributions to education, the Government of India has declared July 15 as Education Development Day. This day serves as a reminder of the power of education in shaping individuals and societies, and encourages a continued commitment towards its advancement.

On this day, educational institutions across the country organize various events and programs to celebrate the legacy of Kamaraj. Schools and colleges hold special assemblies, seminars, and competitions to highlight the importance of education in nation-building. Students participate in activities that promote awareness, innovation, and collaboration, fostering a spirit of lifelong learning.

Education Development Day also serves as an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the efforts of educators, who play a vital role in shaping the future generation. It encourages society as a whole to value education as a fundamental right and invest in its development.

As we observe Education Development Day on July 15, let us remember the indelible contributions of K. Kamaraj to the field of education. Let us reaffirm our commitment to providing quality education to all, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to realize their potential and contribute meaningfully to society. Through education, we can create a brighter and more prosperous future for generations to come, honoring the legacy of the great leader, K. Kamaraj.
