MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has rescheduled the official Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai to September 18, following the decision by the local Muslim community to shift their processions to avoid coinciding with the Anant Chaturdashi celebrations. Anant Chaturdashi marks the final day of Ganesh Utsav, during which large processions are held for the immersion of Lord Ganesha's idols.
Initially, Eid-e-Milad, which celebrates the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, was scheduled for September 16, with processions planned for the following day. However, with Ganesh Visarjan falling on the same day, Muslim community leaders held a meeting and decided to move the processions to September 18 to prevent logistical issues and inconvenience for both festivals.
The meeting, held at Khilafat House in Byculla, explored possible alternative dates, including September 19. However, it was concluded that September 18 would be the most appropriate day. This decision was supported by local community leaders, including Shuiab Khatib, the trustee of Mumbai’s Jama Masjid, who highlighted the challenges of holding both events on the same day.
A peace meeting, organized by the Navi Mumbai Police and attended by officials from various departments and community representatives, confirmed the change. The rescheduling applies to Mumbai, and other districts in Maharashtra may also adjust their Eid holiday dates at the discretion of the local authorities.
CR Introduces Special Train Services in Mumbai for Ganpati Festival
To cater to the increased travel demand during the ongoing Ganpati festival, Central Railway (CR) authorities have arranged additional suburban train services in Mumbai. Starting from Saturday, 22 special trains will operate at night between September 14 and 18.
According to a CR release, 20 of these services will run on the main line, while two will be available on the harbour line. On the main line, trains will operate between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Thane, as well as CSMT and Kalyan, during the nights of September 14/15, 16/17, and 17/18. The harbour line services will run between CSMT and Panvel, specifically on the night of September 17/18.
These special train services aim to facilitate the smooth movement of devotees participating in Ganpati Visarjan during the festival.
