BANGALORE: Eight people have been detained by the Karnataka Police in connection with the attack on Circle Police Inspector Srimanth Illal in Maharashtra during a search on ganja plantations, according to a statement made here on Tuesday by state Home Minister Araga Jnanendra.

The service revolver that the criminal gang had stolen during the raid has also been found, he added. Jnanendra added that the inspector's treatment was still ongoing and he had not yet regained consciousness. To determine the whole connection, the arrested individuals have been interrogated.

The Circle Inspector was evacuated by the Karnataka Police to the Bangalore Manipal Hospital on Monday. In Maharashtra, a group of 40 marijuana growers attacked Inspector Srimanth.

The Inspector's deteriorating health forced the decision to make the special arrangement for the air ambulance.
The incident happened on September 23 in Maharashtra's Taruri village, Umarga taluka, within the boundaries of the Manthala police station. On suspicion of selling marijuana, the police detained Naveen from Kalaburagi and Santosh from Bhosaga in the Basavakalyan Taluk.

According to their information, Kamalapur police inspector Srimanth and a 10-person police team stormed an agricultural area in Maharashtra near the Karnataka border, 80 kilometres from Kalaburagi. A group of 40 people suddenly appeared and attacked the police officers with stones and wooden logs.

Srimanth attempted to shoot, but the attackers outweighed him. He was injured in the stomach, chest, and face. It's said that his condition is critical.
