NEW DELHI: Eight former Indian Naval officers are set to be released from Qatar soon, a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reads. The MEA disclosed on Thursday that Indian ambassadors had been granted consular access to meet these individuals, who were facing the death penalty in Qatar.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi provided an update, noting that following India's appeal in the case, the Qatari court had conducted two hearings. He emphasized that India was actively providing legal and consular assistance in this matter.

Earlier in November, the Indian embassy in Qatar had already received consular access to the imprisoned Indians.

Bagchi highlighted a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad during COP-28 in Dubai. He mentioned that the leaders delved into detailed discussions about bilateral relations and specifically addressed the welfare of the Indian community residing in Qatar.

The developments signify a positive step towards the impending release of these former naval officers, marking a significant advancement in the ongoing case.
