New Delhi: The Election Commission has announced the date of elections to the vacant seats in the Upper House of Parliament. Polling for the six vacant seats will be held on October 4 and counting will also be held on October 4. The Election Commission has announced the entire schedule for six vacant seats in five states and a notification for the same will be issued on September 15.

According to the Election Commission, one vacant seat in Madhya Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and two seats in Tamil Nadu will persist to the polls on October 4. In fact, a by-election will be held on the vacant seat after Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh quota Thaawarchand Gehlot was appointed governor of Karnataka. In Assam, one seat is yet to be vacated after the resignation of Rajya Sabha MP Vishwajit Damra. With this, the seat has fallen vacant after Manas Ranjan Bhunia, who was a Rajya Sabha Parliament from Bengal quota, became a minister in the Mamata Cabinet. Meanwhile, one seat has been vacant even after the death of Rajiv Satav, a Rajya Sabha member from the Maharashtra quota.

With this, two seats have been vacated even after Rajya Sabha MPs KP Munuswamy and R Vaithilingam resigned from Tamil Nadu, which will go to the polls on October 4. According to a press note issued by the Election Commission, notification for all vacant seats will be issued on September 15. Candidates will be able to file their nominations by September 22 and withdraw their nominations by September 27. Polling will be held for the vacant seats till 4 pm on October 4 and the results will be declared by 5 pm.
