Harare: Due to the havoc of the Coronavirus, many important functions and commemorations have been postponed worldwide. The Electoral Commission of Zimbabwe (JEC) has also announced to suspend electoral activities in the country due to the growing havoc of the coronavirus epidemic. So far one person has died due to Coronavirus infection in Zimbabwe.

The news agency Xinhua quoted JEC chairperson Priscilla Chigumba as saying, "In view of President Emerson Mnangagwa declaring the international pandemic Covid-19 a national disaster, all electoral activities in the country are suspended until further notice." The statement issued by the Chairperson of JEC on Wednesday further said that looking at the future situation, even after taking initiation, a decision will be taken in this regard.

He further states that, "New dates for conducting any by-election will be notified at the appropriate time. JEC is taking a number of precautionary measures to protect its employees and common citizens from infection."
