Panaji: Voting is being held today i.e. There are going to be three bye-elections in the state, which include one ward of the Sanquelim Municipal council, one in the District Post seat, and one Village Post Council. The secretary of the state Election Commission, Melvin Vaz, says that 96,567 voters have the right to give their votes in the elections. With this, a total of 423 candidates are contesting for six municipal councils and one municipal corporation. Counting will take place on 22nd March.

The process of municipal elections in Goa has faced many controversies, and that is why it will not be based on the party line. Today, on 20th March, there was voting for 11 municipal councils and one municipal corporation (including three bye-elections), but in the meantime, the Bombay High Court adjourned the voting by terming the ward reservation proceedings for women, SC, ST, and OBC candidates in five municipal councils namelyMadgaon, Mormugao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem.

The Supreme Court, while retaining the order of the High Court, postponed the voting for the five municipalities and directed the state Election Commission to complete the election process by April 30. Amidst all this, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been asked to instruct Chief Minister Pramod Sawant 'not to present the full budget on March 24 as he feared that the announcement of budget and policies could affect voting in five municipalities where elections are already postponed.'
