'Unconstitutional emergency', SC adjourns 94-year-old woman's petition

New Delhi: The country's largest court has agreed to consider the 45-year-old case on Monday. In fact, a petition has been filed in the court declaring the Emergency imposed in 1975 as unconstitutional and compensation of Rs 25 crore. This petition has been filed by a woman named Vera Sarin. In this, he has demanded compensation in lieu of confiscation of his property during the Emergency. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Center regarding this petition.

Senior advocate Harish Salve is appearing on behalf of Veera Sarin. During the hearing, lawyer Harish Salve said, "We have to look again into history and see if things were right at that time". He said, 'If history is not corrected, it repeats itself. Please look into this matter.' The case is being heard by a bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul seeking compensation for the assets seized during the Emergency and declaring it unconstitutional. The bench consists of judges Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy.

In the petition, Veera Sarin said that she and her husband were forced to leave the country. They were threatened that they would be sent to jail if they stayed in the country. After 45 years of emergency in the country and 43 years after its removal, 94-year-old Veera Sarin has filed a petition in the apex court. The Emergency came into force from midnight of 25 June 1975 and was removed in March 1977.
