KIEV: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine on Thursday, a United Nations spokesman has said.

“On the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelensky, the secretary-general will be in Lviv on Thursday to attend a tri-lateral meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Ukrainian leader,” Guterres’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.

According to Dujarric, the group will visit the Black Sea port of Odesa on Friday, where grain exports have started following a settlement mediated by the UN.

With Turkey and the UN, Russia and Ukraine reached a historic agreement on July 22 to resume grain supplies in an effort to alleviate the world food crisis, which has left millions of people hungry.
With UN and Turkish officials, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov signed separate but equivalent agreements on reopening closed Black Sea shipping lanes.
Dujarric said, Guterres and Zelenskyy would meet in Lviv, western Ukraine, to talk about the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power facility as well as "the necessity for a political solution to the crisis."

The shelling near the nuclear plant in eastern Ukraine, which Russian forces gained control of shortly after their invasion on February 24, has been attributed to both Ukraine and Russia. Ukrainian specialists are still running the plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors can go from Kyiv to Zaporizhzhia, according to the UN, but Russia has declared that any expedition through the Ukrainian capital is too risky.

The largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia plant in Ukraine, has a catastrophic risk that is "growing every day," according to the mayor of the city where the plant is situated.
