Ujjain: Diwali was first celebrated in Mahakal Temple today. Today, on the fourteenth day of Roop Chaudas, Diwali worship of Baba Mahakal has been organized during Bhasma Aarti in the morning. Today the time of Bhasma Aarti also increased by almost half an hour. Meanwhile, Aarti was performed by lighting sparklers. With this Mahakal was worshipped. In Bhasma Aarti, 5 lamps each were placed in front of Mahakal on behalf of the Mahakal Temple Committee and the priest family. Dhani-Natasha was offered there.

Mahakaal is called the god of gods. He is the king of Ujjain. Also, Mahakal is said to be one of the oldest temples in the world, hence there is a tradition of celebrating Diwali here first. After celebrating Diwali, common devotees and the public celebrate Diwali. This tradition has been going on since time immemorial. Kapoor Aarti took place after the doors of the temple opened at 3 am. Then with the ringing of temple bells, the entry of devotees started for the darshan of Mahakal. Amidst the preparations, a Panchamrit bath was taken.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga was rubbed with Panchamrit after bathing. This paste is prepared by mixing sesame, saffron, sandalwood, gold, and silver ash, perfume, and many other aromatic substances. The women of the priest family applied it on the Jyotirlinga to enhance the appearance of Mahakaleshwar.

Let us tell you that when women apply ubtan on Jyotirlinga, other Vedic mantras including the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra are also recited. This process lasts for about 10 minutes. All the married women of the priest family perform this Ubtan puja. This puja happens only once a year. Only women from priestly families do it.
