Ex-Chief Secretary BR Sharma appointed J-K's State Election Commissioner

NEW DELHI: On Friday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir announced the appointment of retired IAS officer Braj Raj Sharma as the State Election Commissioner (SEC). The decision was made official through an order issued by Sanjeev Verma, commissioner secretary of the General Administration Department. The appointment will be effective from the date Sharma assumes charge.

Braj Raj Sharma previously served as the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir from 2015 to 2017. The order stated that under the proviso to sub-section (3) of section 36 of the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, the Lieutenant Governor has pleased to appoint Braj Raj Sharma, IAS (Retd.), as the State Election Commissioner for Jammu and Kashmir. The order further mentioned that Sharma will hold the position until he reaches the age of 65.

The government will subsequently notify the terms and conditions of Sharma's appointment, as stated in the order. The post of the State Election Commissioner became vacant on February 1, 2023, upon the completion of K K Sharma's term.
