Maharashtra: Anil Deshmukh calls CBI investigation illegal

Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said in the Bombay High Court last Friday that the CBI probe against him on alleged corruption charges is illegal. Not only that, he also said, "Even Ajmal Kasab, convicted of 26/11 terrorist attacks, had benefited from the law".

In fact, senior advocate Amit Desai, appearing for Anil Deshmukh, told the court, "The CBI probe started with a high court order in April but the Central Investigating Agency did not take the approval of the state government before prosecuting the NCP leader, while he was a public servant at that time". Further advocate Amit Desai also said, 'The investigation into corruption and misconduct against Deshmukh without sanction is 'illegal'."

While cross-examining a bench of Justices SS Shinde and NM Jamdar, advocate Amit Desai said, "You can sideline emotions but we cannot ignore the rule of procedure and law. Even a person like Kasab benefited from the rule of law of this country. In this country, everybody gets the benefit of the legal process".
