Bangalore: Bengaluru Police have cracked down on an illicit abortion racket, resulting in the arrest of a doctor, Dr. Chandan Ballal, and his lab technician, Nisar, accused of conducting approximately 900 illegal abortions over the past three years. The clandestine operations reportedly took place at a hospital in the district headquarters town of Mysuru.

The arrests of Dr. Ballal and Nisar follow the detention of the hospital's manager, Meena, and receptionist, Rizma Khan, earlier this month. The unraveling of the sex-determination and female foeticide racket began last month with the apprehension of Shivalinge Gowda and Nayan Kumar in Mandya, near Mysuru. The duo was arrested while transporting a pregnant woman for an abortion.

Upon interrogation, Gowda and Kumar revealed the involvement of Dr. Ballal and Nisar in the illegal operations. Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of an unauthorized ultrasound scan machine at a jaggery unit in Mandya, believed to be part of the illicit network.

Preliminary findings suggest that the accused doctor and his accomplices managed to perform around 900 illegal abortions at the Mysuru hospital, charging approximately ₹30,000 for each procedure. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to apprehend additional suspects associated with the illicit abortion racket. The arrests highlight the seriousness of the issue of illegal abortions and the need for continued efforts to combat such practices.
