New Delhi: The apex court on Thursday pronounced its verdict on a petition filed by Facebook against a summons of the Delhi Assembly committee. The apex court in its order said that the Peace and Harmony Committee of the Delhi Assembly has full power to summon Facebook officials on an issue.

The apex court said the committee has the power to ask questions but cannot pronounce any punishment. At the same time, the Supreme Court has refused to quash the summons sent by the Delhi Assembly Committee. That is, Facebook Vice President Ajit Mohan is now scheduled to appear before the Delhi Assembly Committee. The committee has the power to ask questions about Facebook's role in the Delhi violence and its use of its platform, though the committee will not be able to take any action. The Supreme Court, while pronouncing its verdict, said that social media has the power to influence a large number of people, there is no limit. A large section of society is not in a position to verify a viral message.

The Supreme Court said that the appeal made by the petitioner is quite pre-mature as no action has been taken except summons. The Supreme Court said the assembly committee cannot initiate any investigation. The court ordered that if the committee passed an order out of its powers, the Facebook officials could deny any appearance. It may be mentioned that a summons was issued by the Peace and Harmony Committee of the Delhi Assembly to the officials of Facebook against which Facebook had filed a petition over the violence that broke out in Delhi in 2020.
