Farmer and Family Die by Poisoning Amid Debt Crisis in UP’s Saifai

Lucknow: In Saifai, Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, a tragic incident occurred involving a debt-ridden farmer's family. Dayashankar, a 28-year-old farmer, along with his 30-year-old widowed sister-in-law Puja and his 13-month-old niece Shivi, all consumed poison mixed in a cold drink. This resulted in their deaths after suffering severe health complications. The family had accumulated a debt of three lakh rupees, with moneylenders persistently pressuring them for repayment.

Dayashankar, who lived with his sister-in-law and niece while his wife stayed at her maternal home, took this drastic step on Monday afternoon. He mixed sulfur powder into the cold drink and consumed it with his sister-in-law and niece. By the time Dayashankar’s mother, Saroj Devi, returned from a neighborhood visit, the three were already unconscious and in severe pain. They were rushed to the Saifai Medical College’s Emergency Trauma Center, but despite medical efforts, Dayashankar and Shivi passed away that night, with Puja dying the following afternoon.

According to Saroj Devi, the family’s financial struggles were exacerbated by local moneylenders who, after extending credit for liquor purchases, charged exorbitant interest rates and eventually lent additional money at high interest. This led to an overwhelming debt that Dayashankar could not manage, even after selling a portion of his land. The local authorities, including SSP Sanjay Verma, are investigating the case, but preliminary findings do not confirm that the deaths were directly due to the harassment by moneylenders.
