Bangalore: The Karnataka government has officially designated Dengue fever, including its severe forms, as an epidemic under the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Act, 2020. This move follows the state government's amendment of the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Regulations, 2020, aimed at intensifying efforts to control the mosquito-borne disease.
According to the government's notification, "In exercise of the power conferred by section 3 of The Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Act, 2020 (Karnataka Act 26 of 2020), the Government of Karnataka has hereby notified Dengue fever, including severe forms of Dengue fever, as an Epidemic Disease in the State of Karnataka."
The amended regulations impose obligations on owners, occupiers, builders, and those in charge of land, buildings, water tanks, parks, and playgrounds to implement measures to prevent mosquito breeding. These regulations are designed to curb the mosquito population and mitigate the spread of Dengue fever across both urban and rural areas. Non-compliance will result in penalties: Rs 400 in urban areas and Rs 200 in rural areas for mosquito breeding, Rs 1,000 for commercial entities and other specified locations in urban areas, and Rs 500 in rural areas. Active construction sites, abandoned areas, and vacant sites will face a fine of Rs 1,000 regardless of location. The new regulations are a response to the rising Dengue cases in the state.
