HYDERABAD: The joint forum proposed for farmers at the national level to replicate Telangana's success in agriculture is expected to be the launchpad for Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao's (KCR) foray into national politics.
The initiative to establish a national organisation, which may later develop into a national political party with farmers' issues at its core, began with the two-day conversation he had here with leaders of farmers organisations from 26 states.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief met with farmer leaders at his official house, Pragati Bhavan, and their discussions suggest that he has finally taken the initiative to bring the farmer organisations from all across the nation together to work on the alternative national agenda.
The TRS leader appears prepared to assume a national role after farmers union officials unanimously adopted a resolution encouraging KCR to spearhead a nationwide effort to unify farmers for struggles.
The farm leaders asked KCR to head a national campaign to unify farmers for struggles starting at the village level after being impressed by the government's actions. Leaders of farmer unions asked KCR to create the strategy for the fights on the second day of the meeting on Sunday, taking into account the altered agricultural environment in the nation.
To address the issues with agriculture and farmers in the nation, KCR urged for democratic agitations and parliamentary forms of fights along the lines of the agitation for Telangana's statehood.
KCR expressed his regret that farmers had not found solutions to their issues even 75 years after India gained its independence and believed that the fights should progress to the point where those who put up barriers to agriculture would be compelled to shout "Jai Kisan" just as those who opposed a separate state joined the "Jai Telangana" chorus.
KCR emphasised the importance of connecting the farmers' agitation with legislators. He recalled how the Telangana movement gained momentum after voters used elections to voice their support for a state. He advised the agricultural leaders to run for office and represent their interests on statutory boards. He also stressed the significance of encouraging voters to support farmers.
KCR presided over protracted deliberations on how the Narendra Modi government's flawed agricultural policies contributed to the collapse of the farming industry. KCR was a fierce opponent of these policies.
The farmer leaders concurred that Telangana's pro-farmer programmes, such as Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, and free power for agriculture, shook up the Central Government.
They adopted a resolution calling for the creation of a "National Farmers' United Forum" to spread Telangana's agricultural advancement and farmer welfare policies across the nation.
