Farmers Protest: Farmers demonstrate at Jantar Mantar, area transformed into cantonment

New Delhi: Farmers opposing three new agricultural laws brought by the Centre have finally got permission to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Farmers to start Kisan Sansad amidst heavy security at Jantar Mantar from today. In view of the farmers' demonstration, elaborate security arrangements have been made from the Singhu border to Jantar Mantar. There is the deployment of police from place to place. Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has given special permission to a maximum of 200 farmers to demonstrate till August 9. Delhi Police sources said, a group of 200 farmers will come to Jantar Mantar from the Singhu border in buses with police protection and will demonstrate there from 11 pm to 5 pm.

A Delhi Police source said, the United Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is leading the farmers' unions agitating against agricultural laws, has been asked to give an affidavit in this regard that all corona rules will be followed and the agitation will be peaceful. On the other hand, SKM said that if the monsoon session of Parliament ends on August 13, their protest at Jantar Mantar will continue till the end. However, the Lieutenant Governor has allowed the demonstration till August 9.

This is the first time that the authorities have allowed protesting farmers' unions to enter the city following the violence in Delhi during a tractor rally on January 26 this year. According to an order issued by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, who is also the chairman of the DDMA, has allowed a maximum of 200 farmers to protest at Jantar Mantar from 11 am to 5 pm every day from Thursday to August 9.
