Bhopal: Kharif crops like soybean, paddy, cotton, maize may be delayed by at least two weeks due to slow monsoon rains in central and western India. This may eventually lead to a decrease in yields. Good monsoon rains lead to good agricultural yields and boost the rural economy. This leads to a spurt in sales of consumer goods ranging from gold and silver to tractors, cars, motorcycles, refrigerators. Due to the decline in soybean production, India will be forced to import edible oils like palm oil, soy oil. On the other hand, the decline in cotton yields may also lead to a decline in its exports. Similarly, India is the world's largest exporter in rice, but low yields can adversely affect its exports.

According to news agency Reuters, farmers have not been able to do so in time due to delay in monsoon rains. According to preliminary data of the Agriculture Ministry, farmers have been able to sow only 2.03 crore acres of land, which is 9 per cent less than last year. Cotton seeding decreased 9.4 percent, while soybean sown 51 percent.
