Hailstorm in MP raises farmers' concerns, causes huge losses

Mandsaur: In Madhya Pradesh, rain lashed several parts of Mandsaur city on Friday-Saturday night due to deteriorating weather conditions. Several villages in Sitamau, Shamgarh and Malhargarh tehsils have received hailstorms accompanied by rain. This is expected to cause damage to Rabi crops including opium, wheat, gram, fenugreek. The weather has been fluctuating in the district since Thursday. As the western disturbances are active, many parts of the district are receiving rain and hailstorm. Crops are getting wet in mandis and fields.

Several areas of Sitamau and Shamgarh tehsils in the district received hailstorms accompanied by rain on the same Friday-Saturday night. In the Sitamau area, there were hailstorms of a size larger than maize. The alarming hailstorm has caused distress to farmers in several villages of Sitamau tehsil. The light also went off as soon as the rain started. Hailstorm has also fallen in some villages of Shamgarh tehsil. Village Takhtpur in Malhargarh tehsil also received hailstorm accompanied by heavy rain. Mandsaur also received heavy rain for some time late in the night.

In Madhya Pradesh, heavy rains and hailstorms have damaged crops in Malwa-Nimar. The worst loss has been in the villages of Sitamau Taha Shamgarh area of Mandsaur. Heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm lashed Ratlam, Neemuch and Dhar districts on Friday as well, causing damage to standing crops in the fields. At the same time, rain is likely to occur in Indore, Ujjain, Dhar Sagar, Rewa, Shahdol, Jabalpur, Bhopal, Gwalior and Chambal division districts even today.
