The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is the Chief of the Army Chief of the Chiefs of the Staff Committee of the Indian Armed Forces. The post is the highest ranked officer in Indian Fars. He is also the Chief Staff Officer and Chief Military Advisor to the Defence Minister. CDS is also the military advisor to the PM. CDS officer is also the head of the department of military affairs.  Interview to be held after written examination of UPSC:-
Candidates are selected on the basis of round of interview after written examination of UPSC. The examination is conducted for two hours. The examination includes questions in English, General Knowledge and Mathematics.  The written examination of IMA, INA and AFA consists of 300 marks papers while the OTA exam consists of 200 marks questions. There is a provision for negative marking for every wrong attempt, under which 0.33 marks are deducted.

Who appoints CDS?
The basic criteria for appointment of CDS are very simple. All the three services - indian army, indian air force (IAF) and any commanding officer of indian navy means army chief, chief of defence staff means eligible for the post of CDS. For appointment, the Central Government has to take a decision on the basis of merit-cum-seniority of the Army Officer. CDS one of the serving officers of the Indian Armed Forces is a four star rank officer. Army chiefs have "first among equals".
