IIT Bill: These institutes can get the status of institutes of national importance

the IIIT (Amendment) Bill on Friday was introduced in the Lok Sabha. Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank laid the bill on the Table of the House. In this, a provision has been made to give the status of Institutes of National Importance (INI) to five Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) to be built in Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala and Raichur in public private partnership (PPP) mode.

For your information, let us tell you that in addition to these five IITs under this bill, the existing 15 IIITs prepared on PPP mode will also be given INI status. These institutions will be allowed to award degrees. All these IIITs will have the right to grant BTech, MTech and PhD degrees like any other university. Under this bill, there is also a provision to amend the Principal Act of 2014 and 2017 and give statutory status to the five institutions.

On the other hand, during the discussion on the bill, Saugata Roy of Trinamool Congress said that the level of education in IIIT should be in line with the demand of the industry. He also stressed on promoting science. Hari Mahtab of BJD said that these institutions should be such that promote the culture of startup in the country.
