New Delhi: A unique flex-fuel prototype of Maruti Suzuki's wildly popular WagonR model was showcased. It was showcased yesterday in New Delhi at a technology demonstration conducted by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

The prototype is designed to run on ethanol blends ranging from E20 to E85. According to the manufacturer, tailpipe emissions are reduced by up to 79% compared to the petrol-powered model.

At the technology showcase yesterday, several automakers showcased their flex-fuel offerings and their dedication to a greener future, with the central government encouraging the use of ethanol under India's ethanol blending program.

Country's largest automaker Maruti Suzuki has unveiled a fully-operational prototype of the ethanol-powered WagonR.
The company claims that the vehicle was made locally with the help of Suzuki of Japan.

The flex-fuel prototype of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR maintains the tall-boy shape of the gasoline-powered model and features a muscular clamshell bonnet, swept-back halogen headlights, a chrome-accented grille, a raked windscreen and a wide air dam. ,
The car gets 15-inch steel wheels, ORVMs and black-painted pillars on the sides.

The rear gets window wipers, roof mounted spoiler and vertically positioned taillamps.

The ethanol-powered Maruti Suzuki WagonR gets a new fuel system with heated fuel rail, an ethanol sensor to detect the percentage of ethanol, an improved engine management system, a fuel pump and a fuel injector for more durability. . The exact details have not yet been made public.

The interior of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR flex-fuel prototype is spacious with five seats, a fabric interior, manual air conditioning, an engine start/stop button and a multifunctional steering wheel.

The hatchback gets a touchscreen infotainment system with the latest connectivity features and a semi-digital instrument cluster.
For the safety of the passengers, there are two airbags, ABS and an engine immobilizer.

Though the vehicle displayed is only a prototype, Maruti Suzuki plans to release its first flex-fuel vehicle in the compact segment by 2025. If offered, the ethanol-powered WagonR will be priced higher than the standard model, which in India starts at Rs. , 5.47 lakh (ex-showroom).
