Lucknow: The Prayagraj Police has filed a case against Zaid Master, the brother-in-law of Ashraf, the brother of Atiq Ahmed, under charges of forgery and cheating. According to the details in the FIR, Zaid Master allegedly instructed someone else to sign on his behalf in the attendance register of MR Sherwani College in the city, where he served as a lecturer in History.

The FIR was initiated based on a complaint lodged by the principal of MR Sherwani College. Zaid's attendance had been marked in the register until November 18, 2023. However, the principal reported not seeing Zaid on the college premises on November 18 and the preceding days. Consequently, the principal brought the matter to the attention of the police, resulting in the registration of the FIR.

The case has been filed under sections 419 of the IPC (pertaining to cheating by personation) and 420 IPS (related to cheating and dishonesty). The Prayagraj Police has launched an investigation into the matter and is actively working to apprehend the accused. Earlier, on November 18, another case had been registered against Zaid and his sister for allegedly engaging in the unlawful acquisition of land.

It's worth noting that Atiq Ahmed, a former gangster turned politician, and his brother Ashraf were fatally shot by three individuals posing as journalists during a media interaction on April 15, 2023, while being escorted by police personnel to a medical college in Prayagraj for a checkup.

Subsequently, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Supreme Court regarding the case. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court that no misconduct was found on the part of the state police during the ongoing investigation into the killing of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj. The case remains pending before the apex court.
