Nand Kumar Baghel, the father of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, passed away at a hospital here on Monday morning. He was 89 years old.

The senior Baghel breathed his last around 6 am at a private hospital in Raipur, where he had been receiving treatment for the past few days. The cause of his death was not specified by Sushil Anand Shukla, the head of the state Congress communication wing.

Bhupesh Baghel, who was in Delhi, is expected to arrive in Raipur later in the day. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his condolences on Nand Kumar Baghel's demise and extended prayers for the departed soul's peace in a message to the grieving family members.

Bhupesh Baghel also took to social media to share the news, stating, “Babuji Shri Nand Kumar Baghel ji passed away this morning. His mortal remains have been kept at Patan Sadan in Raipur. His last rites will be held on January 10 in our home village Kuruddih (Durg district), after my younger sister returns from abroad.” Along with his message, Baghel shared a picture of himself with his father.

Nand Kumar Baghel had faced controversy in 2021 when he was arrested during his son's tenure as Chief Minister for allegedly making contentious remarks about a community. Additionally, in 2000, a dispute arose concerning Nand Kumar Baghel's book titled ‘Brahmin Kumar Ravan Ko Mat Maro’ which led to the Congress government, led by Ajit Jogi at the time, banning the book after the formation of Chhattisgarh.
