A sad news came to the fore for Indian cricket on Sunday (April 2) morning. Former Indian cricketer Salim Durrani has passed away at the age of 88. He breathed his last this morning in Jamnagar, Gujarat. He was battling cancer. Durrani is the first Indian cricketer to be honoured with the Arjuna Award. Durrani was given the title Arjuna Award in 1960. Durrani played a total of 29 Test matches for India and scored 1202 runs, including 1 century and 7 half-centuries, besides taking 75 wickets.

Spin all-rounder Salim Durrani was born on December 11, 1934, in Kabul, Afghanistan. But when Durrani was only 8 months old, his family settled in Karachi, Pakistan. Later, when India and Pakistan were partitioned, Durrani's family moved to India.

Durrani had made a distinct identity in the cricket world in the 1960s and 1970s with his all-round performance. Durrani is known as one of the best all-rounders in India's cricket history. He made his debut in the Mumbai Test against Australia in the year 1960. Durrani was known for his fiery batting. At the same time, Durrani was also very popular for hitting sixes in front of the audience. Salim Durrani played the last Test match on February 23, 1973, against England in Mumbai. Then, after retiring from cricket in 1973, he also tried his hand in the film industry. Salim had worked in the Bollywood film 'Charitra'. Parveen Babi was the heroine in this film.
