Former India footballer Ashok Chatterjee has passed away on Saturday. He was a member of the country's bronze medal-winning team at the Merdeka Cup in 1965 and 1966. He was 78, has a wife in his family and has a son Sandeep who is a musician. Chatterjee has played 30 matches for India's senior team. He made his debut against Japan in the Merdeka Cup in 1965, in which he landed in the second half as a replacement for PK Banerjee.
He scored 10 goals for the country, including two goals during the 3–0 win against Japan in the group league stage in the 1966 Merdeka Cup. Expressing condolences in the release, All India Football Federation President Praful Patel said, 'It is very sad to hear the news of Ashok Chatterjee's demise. His contribution to Indian football can not be forgotten. '
Ashok Chatterjee represented India at the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok and the Asia Cup Qualifier in 1967. He was part of the Merdeka Cup team from 1965 to 1968. He was associated with Mohun Bagan Club from 1961 to 1968 and in 1972 for which he scored 85 goals. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the club last year. He represented East Bengal from 1969 to 1971 and Bengal in the Santosh Trophy.
