Colombo: Muttiah Muralitharan, the legendary Sri Lankan spinner who dared the batsmen with his off-spin during his time on the cricket field, could be appointed as the Governor of Northern Province in Sri Lanka. There are reports that the newly elected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa may appoint Muralitharan, the governor of the northern province, who belongs to the Tamil community.

It is noteworthy that Gotabaya Rajapaksa, during his tenure as defense minister between 2005 and 2015, ended the Tamil outfit LTTE. Tamil minorities did not support Rajapaksa in the elections because of the problems faced by ordinary Tamils in the war with LTTE. Rajapaksa was accused of war crimes. Now that Rajapaksa has won a one-way victory in the recent presidential election, he is trying to improve his image.

Murali, who has named 800 wickets in Test history, is basically Indian Tamil, living in Kandy, Sri Lanka. He openly supported Gotabaya in the election. Because of this people of the Tamil community are not being happy with Muralitharan. According to reports, Murali could be given the responsibility of the governor of the northern province of Tamil-dominated Sri Lanka. This has not been officially confirmed yet.
