Former Supreme Court judge Justice GT Nanavati is no more

New Delhi: Former Supreme Court Judge Justice GT Nanavati passed away on Saturday. He was 86 years old. Justice Nanavati started his legal practice from the Bombay High Court in 1958. He was appointed a judge of the Gujarat High Court in 1979. Thereafter, in 1993, he was transferred to the Orissa High Court.

After retiring from the Supreme Court, he headed the Commissions of Inquiry set up to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the 2002 Godhra riots. He also held the post of Chief Justice of orissa, Gujarat and Karnataka High Court before becoming a judge in the Supreme Court on March 6, 1995. He retired from the Supreme Court on February 16, 2000. Justice Nanavati was born on February 17, 1935.

In May 2002, the Gujarat government appointed Justice Nanavati as the head of the Commission to investigate the Godhra riots. On February 27, 2002, a coach of Sabarmati Express was set on fire in Godhra, killing 59 persons. This was followed by fierce riots in many areas of Gujarat in which more than 1,000 people were killed.
