Former Union Minister and prominent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader, Dayanidhi Maran, revealed on October 10 that he fell victim to a net banking scam, resulting in a loss of Rs.99,999. Taking to his social media platform, Maran disclosed that an unauthorized transaction drained this amount from his personal savings account at Axis Bank. The funds were illicitly transferred through "IDFC First Bank-Billdesk," bypassing all standard security measures.

Surprisingly, no One-Time Password (OTP), typically required for such transactions, was either generated or received on the mobile number linked to his bank account. Maran clarified this in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

In a rather audacious move, the fraudsters did not stop at the unauthorized transaction but also made a call to Maran's wife, who is a joint account holder, inquiring about the transaction's legitimacy. They posed as bank representatives but had the display name "@cbic_india," raising Maran's suspicions. Consequently, he took swift action to suspend all account activities.

Expressing his bewilderment, Maran questioned how the fraudsters managed to access his personal information and breach security protocols effortlessly. He emphasized that this was not a typical phishing attack, and no sensitive information had been shared.

Maran went on to mention that Axis Bank appeared clueless regarding the breach and couldn't provide a satisfactory explanation as to why an OTP was not required from his mobile number for the transaction.

Drawing attention to the incident's broader implications, Maran, who previously served as the Communications & IT Minister in the UPA government, highlighted the concerning vulnerability of not just tech-savvy individuals but also first-time digital users and senior citizens in the face of such scams.
