The Assam government said on Thursday that students in class 10 would be able to resume in-person classes in schools starting September 20 due to improved Covid-19 control and increased vaccine coverage in the state.
From the first week of September, the state government has permitted regular in-person classes for final year students of graduation, post-graduate, and higher-secondary educational institutions.

'Regular courses for students in class 10 will resume on Monday.' This week, a comprehensive set of guidelines will be issued. After the cabinet meeting, education minister Ranoj Pegu remarked that each section should have no more than 30 students.

'Other safety procedures, including as classroom sanitization and adherence to Covid-19 containment regulations, will be maintained. If a class has more than 30 students, it must be split into two rooms,' he explained. If the Covid-19 issue remains under control in the next few days, Pegu added, in-person learning for other classes will resume as well. He advised pupils to get ready for classes as soon as possible.

'Other kids' lessons, which were started earlier, have been running smoothly with no problems, and if the scenario continues, the education department will decide to start classes for other pupils as well,' he added. The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) decided earlier this month to cut the curriculum for class 10 by 40% this year owing to issues pupils are experiencing as a result of the Covid-19 limitations.

For the past two weeks, Assam has been reported about 500 new Covid-19 cases and 5-10 associated deaths each day on average. During this time, the test positivity rate has stayed below 1% on most days. Currently, there are around 4,000 current cases of the illness in the state. Assam had delivered approximately 20.7 million Covid-19 vaccine doses as of Wednesday evening, including 16.8 million first doses and 3.9 million second doses.
