Whenever an auspicious work takes place in Hinduism, Ganapati is worshipped before starting it. You must have heard that Ganesha is worshipped before all the auspicious works, whether it is a marriage, a Mundan ceremony, a housewarming or any other auspicious work.

Once there was a dispute among the gods about who would be worshipped first on earth. All the gods started making themselves the best. Then Naradji, seeing this situation, advised them to go to Shiva. When all the gods reached Shiva, they organized a competition to resolve the dispute among all. He asked all the gods to sit on their respective vehicles and make three rounds of the universe. Whoever comes to him first after doing the circumambulation, they will be worshipped on earth.

All the gods started riding on their vehicles circumambulation of the universe. But Ganeshji did not ride his vehicle mouse. Instead of moving around the universe, he revolved around his parents. He revolved around the parents 7 times and stood with folded hands. When all the God returned by Circumambulating around the universe, they found Ganesha standing there. Now let's go to announce the winner of the competition. He declared Ganesh the winner of this race. All the gods were apprehending why Ganesh was declared the winner. Then Shiva told that the place of parents is supreme in the whole universe and that Ganeshji has revolved around his parents, therefore he is the first to be worshipped among all the gods. Since then Ganesha's worship started first. All the gods accepted this decision of Shiva.
