The sixth edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) kicked up in Kolkata, with industry heavyweights and representatives from 49 countries on Wednesday.
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said in his inaugural address at the Bengal Global Business Summit on Wednesday, amid a galaxy of business stalwarts from various parts of India and international delegations, that the state has enormous potential under the mature leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"West Bengal has the potential to develop into an integral hub for tourism, education, and other industries and sectors, such as coal and iron ore." It has unrivalled resources, which must be fully utilised," West Bengal Governor Biju Patnaik said in his inaugural address.
At the event, business tycoons such as Gautam Adani, JSW chairman Sajjan Jindal, Wipro Executive Chairman Rishad Prasad (AzimPremiji's son), T V Narendran MD Tata Steel, and CII CEO were among those attending.
"Historically, Bengal was the wealthiest land," said Sajjan Jindal, chairman of JSW Steel. Mamata Banerjee is striving feverishly to reclaim her former glories. West Bengal's administration has plans and future-ready reforms in place, including a grass-roots policy on information and technology. A 900 MW hydro pump storage facility is in the works. It will provide Bengal with renewable energy." Jindal said that in the last few years, he had not lost a single "manday" (unit of one day's work) at his Salboni facility.
"The summit is a major landmark," said T V Narendran, MD of Tata Steel and chairman of the CII. The opportunity to summit with a national partner is a CII privilege. Our professional relationship is of the greatest calibre. CII is holding a national council meeting right now. In Bengal, we have a big presence."
