Research in the wake of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) incidents revealed that in the Sutlej and Chenab basins in the year 2018, 132 and 33 acres of less than five hectares and 11 new year lakes in the Rabi basin were formed.

Apart from these small lakes, the scientists of the department say that regular monitoring of five to ten hectares and lakes larger than ten hectares is necessary to avoid the tragedy like Uttarakhand's Kedarnath. A lake of more than ten hectares has been broken into two lakes. Due to this, the number of lakes with 5 to 10 hectares has increased from 8 in 2017 to 10 in 2017. In addition, 240 lakes have been recorded from 207 to less than five hectares. This basin includes the Chandra and Bhaga and Mayad basins. Similarly, another lake of five to ten hectares has increased in the Rabi basin.

This is the reason that in the year 2017, where a total of 101 small big lakes were recorded in this basin. In 2018, only 65 lakes remain.
