New Delhi: Indian government banned the Jamat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir for five years under anti-terror law for maintaining close touch with terror outfits.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a notification banning Jammu and Kashmir based Jamaat-e-Islami as an "unlawful association" under Section 3 of the Unlawful  Activities Prevention Act. The notification was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs after a high-level meeting on security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It has been alleged that the banned group is a political front of banned terror organisation Hizbul Mujahideen, however, the group has categorically denied it.

According to the report, It was formed in 1945 as a chapter of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, the outfit separated in 1953 due to ideological and political differences with the parent body. It was banned in 1990 but after the previous ban lapsed in 1995 it was never invoked again.

This move of government came after the ghastly Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF jawans lost their lives after Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out the suicide bombing on February 14.
