New Delhi: In view of the poor children having no laptop, mobile phone or any means to study for online classes in the coronavirus epidemic, the top court has ordered the Center and the Delhi government. The court said that for this the state and central government should take responsibility and provide facilities to the students. The top court said that during the pandemic, children from economically backward classes were denied the right to education, as they could not afford computers for online classes. In such a situation, the central and Delhi government should give them facilities.

A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud on Friday, while issuing notices to the central and state governments, asked how poor children would get the facility of online classes, from where the money would come for that. The Supreme Court said that the condition of Delhi can still be better, but there is a need to think about the villages and tribal areas. A large number of children are leaving school there. This is a very serious matter and the state government should consider it.

It was being discussed in the Supreme Court whether the state government should provide free facilities for online education to the EWS category and other poor children in private schools. Earlier in the month of September last year, the Delhi High Court had directed the Delhi government to bear the cost of laptops, tablets or mobile phones and internet package to 25 per cent of such children in private schools. It is necessary to bring such poor children at par with other children. This decision of the Delhi High Court has been challenged in the Supreme Court.
