New Delhi: Onion is becoming expensive in the country these days. The common people are troubled by the huge increase in onion prices. In view of the festive season, the government has taken a big step to control prices. The government has fixed the minimum export price (MEP) of onions at $ 850 per ton. This means that onions will no longer be exported below this price. In the last few days, onion prices have increased from Rs 20-30 per kg in the national capital to Rs 40-50 per kg.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification that after this order the minimum export price of all types of onions will be fixed at $ 850 FOB per metric ton. Due to floods in some parts of big onion producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, the central government had also warned of taking stringent measures against hoarding last month.

Onion supply has been affected due to heavy flooding in major onion producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka. To stop the prices, the government has also decided that the retail price of onion should be Rs 23.90 per kg on successful Mother Dairy outlets. On the other hand, the rate of retail inflation has increased to 3.21 per cent in August from 3.15 per cent in July. This rise in retail inflation has been observed due to expensive food products. Onion production in the country is very good.
