The government has recently taken a big decision in the 'hit and run' case. In fact, it is being said that now the family will get 8 times more compensation on death in a road accident. At the same time, the compensation given to the next of kin of the victim in the hit and run case is being increased eight times to Rs 2 lakh from April 1. Let us tell you that this information has been given in a notification of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Yes and accordingly the compensation amount given to the seriously injured person in such cases has also been increased. Earlier it was Rs 12,500 but now it has been increased to Rs 50,000.
Recently the ministry has said that the name of the scheme will be 'Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accident Scheme, 2022' and it will be effective from April 1, 2022. According to a release issued at the same time, the ministry has said that a notification regarding compensation to the victims of 'hit and run' motor accident has been issued on 25 February 2022 in which the compensation amount has been increased. Let us tell you that this amount has been increased to Rs 50,000 for grievously injured and Rs 2,00,000 lakh in case of death from the present Rs 25,000. Recently, the ministry has also said in a release that this scheme will replace the Compensation Scheme, 1989 with effect from April 1, 2022. Apart from this, it was informed in the release that the deadline has also been fixed for the process of applying for compensation and release of payment to the victims.
Let us tell you that the government will create a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, which will be used for compensation in case of hit and run accidents and for the treatment of accident victims. Last year, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had told the Rajya Sabha that in 2019, 536 people were killed and 1,655 were injured in 'hit and run' accidents in the national capital. At the same time, according to the latest government data, a total of 3,66,138 road accidents occurred in India during 2020, in which 1,31,714 deaths occurred.
