Govt Constitutes UAPA Tribunal to Probe Ban On Zakir Naik's IRF

New Delhi: Following the extension of the five-year ban issued on Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Organisation (IRF), the Centre established an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal on December 14 under the terms of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) to adjudicate against the ban. The news comes after the central government declared the non-profit organisation to be an "unlawful association" in a gazette notice dated November 15, 2021.

The tribunal's goal is to determine if the restriction on Naik's IRF is legal or whether there isn't enough reason for it. "The Central Government hereby establishes an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, consisting of Justice DN Patel, Chief Justice of the High Court of Delhi, to determine whether there is sufficient cause to declare the Islamic Research Foundation an unlawful association," the Ministry of Home Affairs' notification stated.

The Ministry of Home Affairs stated on November 15 that the IRF has been engaging in activities that are detrimental to the country's security and have the potential to undermine peace and communal harmony, as well as the country's secular fabric.
