Governmnet lifts ban over export of hydroxychloroquine

New Delhi: The Central Government has approved a proposal to lift ban the export of the hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) of malaria, which is considered effective in dealing with Corona. Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda has given information in this regard. He told on Wednesday that the ban has been lifted from the export of both HCQ's API i.e. bulk drug and its formulations.

The central government had imposed a ban on commercial export of this medicine on 25 March. However, its consignment was delivered to many countries on humanitarian grounds. But it was being exported not to private companies but only to governments. Union Minister Sadanand Gowda has tweeted that, 'All manufacturers other than SEZ / EOU units will have to supply at least 20 percent of their total supply in the Indian market. DGFT has been asked to issue a formal notification in this regard.

In many countries, hydroxychloroquine is being used to deal with coronavirus patients. Apart from this, Gowda has also discussed with pharma companies and senior officials of his ministry to increase pharma exports from the country. From April to January 2019-20 from India, HCQ API i.e. Active Pharma ingredients were exported for $ 1.22 billion. Meanwhile, about $ 5.50 billion was exported for formulations made of hydroxychloroquine. The total export of hydroxychloroquine during this period was about $ 6.72 billion.
