Bhubaneswar:the first human milk bank in Odisha was opened at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar on  Wednesday, . It will supply breast milk to newborns who are unable to be breastfed by their mothers, as well as infants whose mothers have died, become ill, or are unable to make enough milk, or babies who are unable to suck on their mothers' milk.

"The milk can be held in the bank for up to six months following pasteurisation," said LD Sahoo, director of Capital Hospital. The stored milk will initially be given to in-house infants. We may open similar facilities in other centres depending on the reaction."

His cutting-edge milk bank would ensure that the nutritional value of mothers' milk is preserved, he continued. 19 breastfeeding moms donated their milk to the bank on the first day of its operation, which was then fed to their children. "We need at least 2.5 litres of milk for pasteurisation." The milk bank has not yet been put to commercial use. Only moms are now preserving milk for their children. The hospital's deputy director, Dhananjay Das, stated, "There is a need to sensitise them to donate and also counsel the families of infants to use this resource."

Donor health data would be preserved in the hospital, ensuring that the stored milk is used properly, he added.
