Govt sanctions Rs 650 crore CancerCare facility in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: The Central government in collaboration with Tata Trust, will build a state-of-the-art cancer hospital and a skill development centre for oncology treatment on the campus of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Jatni.

Union Education and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made the announcement following a meeting with Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and senior administrators of the Tata Memorial Centre in New Delhi on Tuesday. Aparajita Sarangi, MP from Bhubaneswar, also attended the meeting. 

The hospital will be built at a cost of Rs 650 crore. The Centre will invest Rs 400 crore to the project, with Tata Trust spending the remaining Rs 250 crore. "In line with Prime Minister @narendramodi's vision, the cancer care hospital and skill development centre at @niser official will strengthen treatment facilities, scale up competencies, and initiate high-quality research to meet emerging requirements in the field of oncology," Pradhan said Tuesday.

While NISER has already designated 17 acres of land on its campus for a cancer hospital, Pradhan said that the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will donate an additional 10 acres. The hospital and related infrastructure will be built by Tata Trusts.

After construction, which is expected to take 3 years, the hospital will be handed over to the Central Government. Pradhan said that the Ministry of Health will set up a skill training centre in the proposed hospital for the purpose of skilling and capacity building of medical staff. He said, proposed medical institute will provide research in advanced cancer care in all respects.
