Due to the less number of takers for the Amma two-wheeler scheme, the Greater Chennai Corporation has requested working women in the city to apply to avail the benefit. According to the scheme, the Chennai Corporation would provide Rs 25,000 or 50 per cent of the two-wheeler, whichever is minimum, as subsidy.

Working women in the city can apply to the zonal offices with age and address proof, driving license and income details to get the subsidy. Women between 18 to 45 years are eligible, a Chennai Corporation statement said. A target to provide subsidies to 9,519 working women every year has been set by the civic body said a Chennai Corporation official.

Earlier the lesser number of applications were received, following which the government had relaxed the education qualification for the beneficiaries. “Last year, we received more than 10,500 applications and processed 9,519 applications. Also, the target has been reduced to 6,062 this year. We will process the pending applications of the previous year. This year, 7,000 women can receive the benefit,” an official said.
