New Delhi: The sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur, popularly known as 'Hind Ki Chadar' in history, is celebrated today as 'Shahidi Diwas' on 24 November. Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth Guru of the Sikhs and had sacrificed his life for people who were not even from his community. In 1675, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, at Chandni Chowk in Delhi, killed Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh religious leader. Noel King of California University, who conducted several studies on Guru Tegh Bahadur, referred to the incident, saying that 'Guru Tegh Bahadur's murder was the first martyrdom in the world to protect human rights'.
Aurangzeb was a radical Islamic Mughal emperor. Aurangzeb's history is replete with many accounts of bigotry. Aurangzeb also wanted to make India an Islamic nation and for this he forced and tortured Hindus in many ways. In such a situation, a group of 500 Kashmiri Pandits led by Pandit Kripa Ram went to Anandpur Sahib to seek help from Guru Tegh Bahadur. Guru ji immediately agreed to help him. Guru ji told him that message should reach Aurangzeb that if Guru Tegh Bahadur accepts Islam, then all those people will accept Islam, this was done.
After this Guru Tegh Bahadur challenged Aurangzeb that he would die, but would not accept Islam. Enraged by this, the cruel ruler Aurangzeb arrested Guru Tegh Bahadur along with supporters and tortured them for five days. But Guru Tegh Bahadur still refused to accept Islam. Aurangzeb's barbarity can be gauged from the fact that his supporters were burnt alive in front of Guru Tegh Bahadur. On 11 November 1675 AD, Kazi read the fatwa at Chandni Chowk, Delhi, and the executioner Jalaldin chop off the head of Guru Sahib away from the torso. On the sacrificial day of such Guru, we pay him a humble tribute.
