Guwahati: In a major incident, a woman was killed and five others were injured when a water supply line burst in Assam's Kharguli area on Thursday, police said. The current of water damaged several houses and vehicles and people rushed to save themselves, an official said. The injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital, the officer said. Senior officials have reached the spot and the cause of the incident is being ascertained.

Watching the video gives an idea of the magnitude of the accident. The strength of the water was seen in such a way that it went far above the high-rise buildings in the area. Looking at the video, it seems that about 10-storey buildings nearby are also seen dwarfed in front of the water current. Some goods are also seen flowing in the water. The video was shot from a high-rise building in front. People have claimed that water has entered many houses. Another video of the incident shows that some speeding vehicles were hit by a torrent of water. A car was seen overturning on the road.

According to local media, the main water supply line of Gammon JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) at Kharguli in Guwahati burst at around 3 am. The name of the woman who lost her life in the accident is being told as Sumitra Rabha. Sumitra lived in one of the houses that were damaged by the torrent of water. The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has assured that the water supply will be restored soon.
