Gyanendro Ningombam, from Manipur has been elected unopposed as the first Hockey India president from the Northeast region of India. He is the first person from the Northeast region to be appointed in the top most post of India’s national hockey team. The sources said Ningombam contesting as the president of Hockey India from July 2020 after Mohammed Mushtaque Ahmad resigned on July 7, 2020 from the president post, was elected during the 10th Hockey India Congress and Elections held in New Delhi.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has congratulated Ningombam for being elected as the top post of the Indian hockey team. CM Biren Singh tweeted, “Congratulations to Shri Gyanendro Ningombam on being elected unopposed as Hockey India President at the 10th Hockey India Congress & Elections held in New Delhi. Gyanendro Ningombam becomes the first President from the North East India to spearhead @TheHockeyIndia".

A video conferencing facility was made available for member units who were unable to travel due to the COVID 19 restrictions imposed. He has served as the senior vice-president of Hockey India, senior vice-president of the Manipur hockey team and chief executive officer of the Manipur state hockey team between 2009 and 2014 and he has a close association with the game for over a decade. Ningombam also served as the editor of Manipur’s evening daily, Meeyam. He will serve for a period of two years. Sources said the designation suits him the best as he is actively involved in developing hockey at the grassroots in the North East region.
