The Premier League has been lit on fire by Erling Haaland. For Manchester City, the 22-year-old striker has so far scored 17 goals in 11 appearances. A changing of the guard is confirmed by Haaland's red-hot form. The dominance of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is waning as the Haaland age begins. The Manchester City boss believes Haaland's goal-scoring ability is still behind that of Lionel Messi, though.

Guardiola explained the difference between Haaland and Messi. He said: “The difference is, maybe that Erling needs all his mates to do it. It is unbelievable. [But] Messi had the ability himself to do it.”

Guardiola made his remarks shortly after the Manchester Derby, in which Haaland's hat-trick helped Manchester United defeat the Red Devils 6-3 at the Etihad. In 2011–12, Messi had his best season, scoring an amazing 73 goals for Barcelona across all competitions, including 50 in the Spanish league. Haaland is on track to pose a threat to those numbers.

Due to the disturbance to the club calendar, Norway didn't make it to Qatar, so he will be recovering while the best athletes in the world compete in the middle of what will be a very busy season. Haaland's midseason sabbatical may have made him more alert when the Premier League begins in December.

In retrospect, Guardiola is also correct because Haaland is largely dependent on midfielders like Riyad Mahrez, Kevin de Bruyne, Bernando Silva, and Phil Foden. Messi never relied on anyone else for the assist, though, at the same time. Only time will tell whether Haaland can surpass Messi's seven Ballon d'Or victories.
