Anju was born to KT Markos in the Kochuparambil family of Changanacheri in Kerala. His father initially taught him athletics, later his instructor at Korothode School developed his interest in athletics. She completed his schooling at CKM Korothode School and graduated from Vimala College. She won the 100 m hurdles and relay races at the School Athletic Conference in 1991–92 and finished second in the long jump and high jump competitions, thus becoming the women's champion. Anju's talent was seen at the national school games where she finished third in the 100-meter hurdles and 4x100-meter relay. She was at Calicut University.

Anju won the bronze medal at the AIFF World Championships in the year 2003 with a jump of 6.70 meters. She was the first Indian player to win a medal in this tournament. The tournament was played in Paris that year. Let us tell you that Anju missed out on being very close to the medal in the Olympics held in Athens in the year 2004. She did a jump of 6.83 meters that year which was his best performance. Although she was ranked 5th. It is still a national record in India.

According to media reports, Anju was given the Arjuna Award in the year 2003, while in the year 2004, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna was given. In the year 2004, he was awarded the Padma Shri Award. She competed in the Olympics in 2008 but did not qualify for the finals. Anju attributes her success to her husband and coach Bobby Robarts. The two met for the first time at Sai Center and got married in the year 2002. The Roberts made great improvements while working on Anju's game which brought her history.
