Vijaya Laxmi Pandit, the sister of Jawaharlal Nehru and daughter of freedom fighter Motilal Nehru, was the first Indian woman to become the President of the United Nations General Assembly. Today is her 118th birth anniversary. On this occasion of her birth date we are going to tell you some interesting things about her. Vijaya Laxmi Pandit was born on 18 August 1900 in the Nehru family, a reputed political family of India. Swaroop Kumari Nehru was Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit's real name. Her father Motilal Nehru was a well-known lawyer and freedom fighter. Her elder brother Jawaharlal Nehru had the distinction of becoming the first Prime Minister of the country. After India gained independence in 1947, Vijaya Laxmi Pandit was appointed as a member of the Indian delegation to the United Nations. She married Ranjit Sitaram Pandit in 1921. After that, her name was changed to Vijaya Laxmi Pandit.

Vijaya Laxmi had also been India's ambassador to countries like Britain and Russia. She has also been the Governor of Maharashtra from 1962 to 1964. In 1953 she became the President of the United Nations General Assembly. She was the first Indian woman to hold this post. She became an MP by winning elections from Phulpur Lok Sabha seat of UP after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. In 1975, she prominently opposed the Emergency imposed by her niece Indira Gandhi. After this, Indira and her relationship became forever invaded.

In 1977, she resigned from her own brother's party, Congress. Vijaya Laxmi Pandit was also very fond of writing. The Evolution of India (1958) and The Scope of Happiness (1979) are her famous books. She died at the age of 90 in Dehradun on December 1, 1970.
