He worked as a child artist in many films. But he started his career as an actor in the film Ek Thi Rita in the year 1971. Tanuja was in the lead role with him in the film. In his career, he worked in films like Parde Ke Pichhe, Ailaan, Amar Prem, Lal Pathar, Jani Dushman, Naagin, Ghar, Swarg Nark, Jurmana, Ek Hi Rasta, Anuroodh, Amar Deep, Bemisal.
He died due to a heart attack on 30 October 1990 at the age of 45. Talking about his personal life, Vinod's name is associated with Bollywood's Evergreen actress Rekha. During one of his interviews, he had said that he wanted to marry Rekha. Vinod married thrice. After divorcing the first two wives, he married Kiran and the couple also has a daughter named Sonia.
